Straight Through Processing Comes of Age

THE achievement of STP – ‘Straight Through Processing’ – has been a major technological priority for banks and large financial institutions for about the last fifteen years, because of the tangible and intangible benefits that have followed its successful implementation. Historically, financial institutions’ systems grew on a piecemeal basis. Computer systems were introduced on the grounds that they gave the opportunity for realising profitmaking or processing efficiencies in a particular department or business unit. The underlying projects were often sponsored by local managers or money-makers. In practice, early growth was disjointed, and not necessarily linked accurately with bottom-line benefits.
