When Fiberweb was spun off its parent company and floated, the new management team had to build essential corporate functions from scratch. In this article the author, Fiberweb’s Treasurer, describes how an independent Treasury was established, with new systems, cash pooling and money market facilities to be provided for its small domestic and much far-flung business. Strategy papers on financing, foreign exchange and interest risk management were prepared, and approved by the board, and a banking consultancy committee set up to oversee the choice of banking partner. The article includes a valuable list of lessons learned during this challenging initial period.
